tea room restaurant review
Afternoon tea has long been something that sets my mind dreaming...tiered cake plates, sandwiches with the crusts cut off and fine china. And if the teas and treats come highly recommended, then what could be better? It was with this feeling that my companion and I set off for the Queen of Cups tea room in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia. We had preordered the afternoon tea, which from the pics on the website, promised to be wonderful. And it began well enough. Our waitress brought out a marvlous selection of loose teas from which we could choose. I had an Earl Grey and my companion had a lapsang souchong. The tea arrived, marvelous and fragrant. Then the tiered plate of goodies arrived. Words fail me (but I'll try)... A few sandwiches of assorted varieties, delcaitely cut in shapes. They weren't bad but the bread was of the plastic bag variety and had that tinge of slight crispiness at its edges, indicating a bit of sitting time in the open air. The filling for these were middling, not bad but nothing stood out. The desserts, on the other hand, stood out. Store bought 'two bite' brownies with a dollop of icing added. Ditto the miniature lemon tarts. All easily recognisable for their grocery chain origins. The waitress noted me staring at them and misunderstood, raving 'oohh I know, those are great". I was speechless. There were also two strawberries who had each seen better days and were dipped in chocolate. The entire effect was a terribly disappointing treat...no treat at all. And all to the tune of almost $50 CDN for the two of us. My best advice regarding the Queen of Cups is to spend your $50 more wisely...and bake your own tea time treats! |
